Trekking Sri Lanka
A talk by Marcia Summers

Marcia undertook a 1,000km trek from Sri Lanka’s southern shores to its northernmost tip to raise money for the charity ‘Their Future Today’.
Their Future Today’s comprehensive and holistic approach targets the grassroots level, to promote family care in Sri Lanka, support families to prevent abandonment, ensure the education of children to prevent the cycle of poverty and introduce a foster care system so that every child can reclaim their human right to grow up in a family. From birth to adulthood, we reunite, educate, support and strengthen disadvantaged and forgotten children and families of all faiths.

Through specific development projects to support people’s needs, TFT aims to directly provide the knowledge, resources and tools to improve conditions in orphanages, prevent abandonment, strengthen families and bring about sustainable change in the community and nationally.
During her talk Marcia will describe her experiences of this epic journey, highlighting the nation’s resilience and the indomitable spirit of its people. The money she raised supported the work of The Women’s Development Centre in Kandy.
For almost 30 years, I worked in the further education sector, culminating my career as Assistant Principal at a London college in April 2024.

I now have more time to enjoy travelling to unique destinations and then writing about the places, experiences and people I encounter along the way. Volunteering is a rewarding part of my life. I use my skills to help improve the life chances of girls and women affected by gender-based violence, as well as children impacted by poverty in Sri Lanka.
Through her frequent visits to Sri Lanka Marcia has gained a profound and unique perspective on the country and its people, which has deeply influenced her writing.
Closer to home in the UK, I volunteer with Surrey Care Trust, mentoring young people at risk of entering the criminal justice system and supporting parents navigating those.
