Pickleball

It’s fun to play, easy to learn and a great way to exercise and make friends.
Pickleball originated in the USA some 60 years ago and is one of the fastest- growing sports. It was established n Elmbridge at Cobham Village Hall in 2017 by Howard Springett and Eu3a now has eleven very enthusiastic groups
Combining elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, pickleball is played using flat paddles and a perforated plastic ball. Points are won by manoeuvring opponents with strategy rather than power, making it suitable for all genders and ages.
Angela Springett Pickelball 5 Group Leader says “The success of the game in Elmbridge has been amazing, with so many members enjoying playing, improving their fitness and establishing friendships. Groups have Christmas and summer social gatherings and WhatApp groups to keep us all connected.”
For seniors staying active is important, improving mobility, strength, and mental sharpness. Peter Ellaway Pickleball 7 Group Leader says, “We are aged mostly 60-80 years and find pickleball an exciting way of combing exercise with plenty of fun and laughter. Most have graduated from tennis and find pickleball a new and rewarding challenge”
An Eu3a squad was formed a few years ago which represents Eu3a in the SE Pickleball League playing in various tournaments around the country, with great success.
“Whether playing singles or doubles, the sport naturally creates friendships helping to combat loneliness - an all-too-common issue among older people.” Says Nigel Cudby.
Ultimately, pickleball isn't just a sport—it's a lifestyle enhancer. For seniors looking to stay fit, have fun, and make new friends it’s a perfect match.
